Friday Program News
This term in the Friday Program we have had a big focus on ‘numbers’. We have been reading number books such as ‘The Peddler’ and ‘The doorbell rang’, and singing lots of number songs – some favourites being ‘5 guitars’, ‘The ants go marching’ and ‘This old man’. We have been working with traditional Montessori materials, such as the spindle box, cards and counters, the red and blue rods, the teen board and the hanging bead stair. The children have been learning to recognise the numerals and match them to quantities of objects. They have even been having a go at writing the numerals, learning to follow the correct formations with the help of some fun number rhymes.
To help the children develop their literacy skills, we have been playing lots of word games using rhyme and initial sounds. We read several books during the session, and use these stories to discuss a range of elements such as rhyme and rhythm, characters and scenes, authors and illustrators, and social messages. We also read them just because they are fun!
On Fridays, the children benefit from joining up with the Reception classes for fitness, ‘Fruity Friday’ and our afternoon science rotations. Working with the Receptions is a great way for our Friday children to make new friends and become familiar with the other teachers and classroom environments. We have also enjoyed some lunchtime visits from our ‘Ex-Friday- Programmers’ who often pop in to say hi and play with their friends… It’s great to see you and hear how well you are doing at school.
Just a quick reminder that hats and sunscreen are now required. If your child cannot use the school sunscreen for medical reasons, please provide them with their own named sunscreen to keep at school.
