Montessori and Gonski
The second Gonski report, Through Growth to Achievement: Report of the Review to Achieve Educational Excellence in Australian Schools was delivered to the Prime Minister and the Minister for Education and Training on 28th March 2018.
The Gonski report recommends that a shift from specified learning outcomes based on age and grade to a focus on each student’s learning growth will transform the current education model to one that differentiates learning for each student, ensuring “all Australian students reach their full learning potential in each year of schooling” (p.5).
As Montessori educators, we are excited about this recommendation. Differentiation is fundamental to the Montessori method and we consistently strive to differentiate learning to ensure we meet the needs of each student. We also build self-awareness and a love of learning by encouraging our children to identify when learning has just the right amount of challenge and is neither too hard nor too easy.
Following the release of this report, Montessori Australia released a considered response to Gonski and a position paper.
