Education in Harmony with Nature

In 2009, Southern Montessori undertook a Solar Schools program. In 2010 we had a whole school focus on raising awareness of sustainability issues that are present in our school environment.

This year, as we become a focus school in the southern region with the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative, we look forward to returning to a whole school focus on sustainability. We will be applying for various grants to assist us in our endeavours. There will be exciting changes ahead as the students undertake rewarding new projects.

We have established a leadership team made up of Year 7 students who will lead the school and attend the youth forums this year. This leadership team will come back and work with fellow students to share what they have learned.

As well as continuing with our recycling and awareness raising programs, in 2013 we envisage:

• creating a sustainable vegetable and herb garden
• further establishing a fox proof sustainable chicken coop
• develop a tree/plant revegetation program

These projects will involve the students, staff and local community working together in planning, designing and constructing.

Together we hope to foster positive behaviours and attitudes towards our natural environment, as we strive for a more sustainable future.
