Getting to know our Board members
Ray Rootsey, Board Treasurer
My association with Southern Montessori School has only been a couple of years with my grand-daughters starting in the Early Learning Centre in 2016. I now have two grand-daughters at the school and I have been very impressed by the commitment of all the staff and the positive effects of the Montessori pedagogy on the development of confident and resilient children.
I am enjoying my time on the Board and I am enjoying being part of the very supportive SMS community. I recently retired from a career in the water treatment industry which included working in government, private and education sectors in Australia and 15 years overseas. My last position was in Brisbane as manager of a research centre at the University of Queensland before moving to Adelaide with my wife in 2014 to be near our three daughters and their families who had all previously moved at different times to Adelaide.
I have never been involved with a Montessori school before but I fully endorse the love of learning (having continued to study throughout my life in such things as civil engineering, environmental science, business administration and naturopathy) and the importance of movement for the development of a healthy mind (having been actively involved with various sports all my life including soccer, squash and sailing).
