The children in our classroom have been working through our Montessori number sequence with great enthusiasm. We have been focusing closely on place value. The younger children in our cycle have been using our concrete materials to compose, decompose, represent and order numbers from 0-1000. Children have also spent time making quantities using our Mortensen blocks, Golden beads, and bead chains.
“A child’s understanding of place value and the base ten system is built upon a broad conceptual framework of number size, number relations, flexibly decomposing and reconfiguring numbers, and thinking multiplicatively.” James Brickwedde
You may recognise an error in the above number sequence. Mistakes are an extremely important aspect of our work and we are learning to adapt and respond to errors with greater resilience. Jakob reviewed his number sequence by counting and quickly recognised his error “Oh, I forgot 16” he carefully moved his number flags to make the space required for the missing numeral.
