After identifying what their food chain and web might include, the children began thinking about how that food gets to their plates. It was identified that they relied on the producers (plant based foods) directly or the primary consumers (cows, sheep, fish) that ate the producers. Many children also saw the interconnection between the foods they ate. This led to discussions about how the plants that we all so heavily rely on, grow and reproduce. After some deep thought and sharing of prior knowledge, the children recognised that bees were responsible for a high percentage of the food we consume. Through further research we found that bees pollinate a third of the food we rely on in our diets! Here are some examples of this learning.
