Michelle and Lea’s Class – Term 2 Plans
Welcome to Term 2. We have had a great start to the term.
Our Cultural Studies work this term comes from Montessori’s first great lesson, The Formation of the Universe. Last week we shared the story together and focussed our work around our solar system. We modelled our solar system in several different ways to help the students gain an understanding of the size.
Our first model was focussed on the distance between the planets, and the orbits they take. We tied beads to a length of string with the beads representing the planets and we spaced them out along the string to model the distances between each of the planets with the scale of 10 cm = 150 million km (1 Astronomical Unit).
We also went on a ‘planet walk’ to pace out the distances between the planets. This time we also focussed on the different planet sizes and used items to represent the planets that were an approximation of the actual size. The sun was represented by a yellow dodge ball and we placed it by the double gates between the playground and the oval. We walked across the oval to lay out our other planets and found that we couldn’t fit them on the oval, and to fit all the planets in Neptune was nearly up to the shops, up the hill on Galloway Rd. In this model Mercury and Mars were represented by pinheads, Venus and Earth each by peppercorns, Jupiter a macadamia nut, Saturn a hazelnut and Uranus and Neptune by coffee beans.
(Placing Jupiter on the ground and looking back, straining to see the sun a long way away.)
We also look forward to having a visit from Skywatch with their portable planetarium later in the term.
Our whole class science work will focus on understandings, linked with the story, of light and sound.
Our school has a healthy food policy and we believe that setting healthy habits at this age is very important. We encourage students to take responsibility for packing their own food for school but ask that you support them with this. Foods high in sugar and salt are not appropriate for school. Thank you.
We look forward to a great term. As always, pop in and see us or send us a message if you have any questions.
