Last term in Science we focused on Chemistry, in particular acids and bases. We began the topic by studying the differences between acids and bases. We looked at regular household items, made predictions about whether they were an acid or base, and then tested them through a Science experiment using a pH indicator. We did this by dipping the pH indicator strips into the substance. The strip then changed colour depending on the properties of the item and we could them determine them as either acidic or alkaline.
To conclude this topic the students were given a STEM task to design an air pillow using the reaction of acids and bases that would catch a highlighter falling from one metre. Students were supplied with a variety of classroom items such as tape, paper clips, paper straws, pens, pop sticks and a zip lock bag. Students then had to mix an acid and base- vinegar and bi-carb soda, to create a reaction that released a gas to fill the air bag. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the task. Although there were mixed results in terms of success, the student reflections on their work were outstanding.
This term, we had a visit from some of the residents from Kalyra Aged Care. Our students designed a menu and prepared a morning tea for our guests. We then sat down altogether and shared stories about life, what we are doing at school and some of the experiences we hope have when we move to Kalyra. The morning was so successful that they have invited us over for lunch later this term.
