Middle School Science
Science classes in the Middle School have a muscle and skeletal system focus for our Year 8 and 9 students. After learning about the functions and structures of muscles and bones, we have tasked our students with a biomedical engineering STEM task of making a prosthetic lower leg from readily available materials. Students have to make the prosthetic limb strong enough so they can walk ten metres with it fixed to their knee. Our students have responded well to the challenge and are eagerly planning, constructing and testing for the final product to be showcased to the class in the middle of Week 5.
Our Year 7 students always begin the year with a little knowledge about what Science actually is. They have just learnt ‘how to write a prac report’ and have conducted an experiment to test their skills. Using white vinegar and bi-carb soda, we attempted to change an acid into a base. Slowly, the students added the bi-carb soda to the vinegar and recorded their observations. After each gram of bi-carb soda was added to the vinegar, the students tested the pH level to see how when they achieved success.
