Term 3 Occupations
Our Middle School students are hosting a ‘Market Day’ in the last week of this term where they are planning to open their school to the Southern Montessori community and to residents of Kalyra. The focus of this term’s Occupations subject is working towards this day. Our students had the choice of three groups; ‘food preparation’, ‘jewelry making’ and ‘plant production’ where they will produce items to sell.
I am facilitating the food preparation group and have asked one of the students in the group to explain what they are doing.
“Over the coming weeks in the food group we are preparing food to sell at the market. We are looking at fermentation and pickling, making jams, chutneys and sauces, as well as baking breads. We are going to the Central Market to see what they do there and how they present their products. James is teaching us about safe food handling and how to prepare things in jars that will last. I am thinking about making Sriracha sauce, which is a fermented chilli sauce that started in Asia but is now popular all over the world. I am also looking at making some pickled onions and maybe strawberry jam also. We hope that it is a popular event.”
There will be more information about our market day to come so look out for it! We also ask that if you have a veggie garden or fruit trees with surplus produce, drop some in to the Primary Campus or Middle School and we will turn it into something tasty.
