Fun and Fitness Morning – Year 6 Leadership on Display
Joy, feeling one’s own value, being appreciated and loved by others, feeling useful and capable of production are all factors of enormous value for the human soul.
The Montessori learning environment is built around the concept of a three-year, multi-age classroom. One purpose of the multi-age classroom is to encourage older children to serve as leaders, both academically and socially. Younger children learn readily from observing their older peers through imitation and peer-to-peer teaching.
At Southern Montessori, we provide many additional opportunities for our older children to develop their leadership skills and one of these opportunities is our annual Fun and Fitness morning for preschool and reception children. Traditionally each activity station is manned by Year 6 students.
The Year 6’s really enjoy the opportunity to demonstrate their activity and encourage the younger children to participate. Parents also comment on the confidence and kindness the Year 6’s display.
Developing student leadership requires more than simply asking older children to help the younger ones. The teaching team spend considerable time cultivating leadership in our Year 6 students and discussing responsibilities and expectations. The Year 6’s take these responsibilities seriously, they enjoy the relationships they build with younger students, and soon realise that being a good role model is both important and rewarding.
